In that case you might prefer an 85 f/1.8 over a 35 f/1.8. in that case maybe you'll also realize that you at the same time wish you had a lens that was a little longer than 55mm and had a wide aperture. But maybe you decide down the road that you want to do more portraiture and that's why you want wide aperture. You might think you want the 35 f/1.8 now, a lot of people like it because it's wide aperture is good for low light and it's focal length is a "normal" one. If you say "I wish the aperture was wider" you'll also want to know what focal lengths you prefer because most wider aperture lenses don't have huge zoom ranges (and many have no zoom at all like the 35mm f/1.8). Once you've used it a lot, if then you start to say "I wish the lens was more telephoto and let me zoom in more" you might want a more telephoto lens or if you start to say "I wish the lens would go wider" you might want an ultra wide lens. Use it to photograph the things you want to take photographs of. It lets you focus pretty close (closer than many non-macro lenses).
